Part of the magic of our favorite classic candies is that they’ve stayed the same for decades—sometimes even centuries—looking and tasting just like they did when you could buy them for a nickel at the corner store way back when. It’s a kind of nostalgia you can’t manufacture.
However, not every candy ages so gracefully. Some classics will always have our hearts, but we wouldn’t mind if they got a little upgrade. And while we’re all for a retro moment, some treats are just too stuck in the past—and in Laffy Taffy’s case, they’re also stuck in the wrapper.
For years, Laffy Taffy fans have had one universal complaint: the packaging. And now, the candy company is finally doing something about it.
Laffy Taffy Is Finally Changing Its Packaging
Whenever Laffy Taffy has a moment on Reddit, TikTok, or any other corner of the internet, the commentary is almost always the same.
“I hate Laffy Taffy packaging,” someone vented in the Mildly Infuriating subreddit. “It’s the worst. You’d think by 2024, they’d have engineered something better,” added another.
You try to pull it out in one clean piece, but the wrapper clings to the candy like it’s holding on for dear life. No matter how you pull, prying out an unscathed piece of taffy is nearly impossible—and if you manage it, it’s probably still wearing confetti-like shreds of wrapper you have to peel away painstakingly.
“Every time I ate it, I would accidentally eat the package too,” one fan admitted.
Over time, this shifted from mild annoyance to a flat-out “infuriating” part of the candy-consuming experience. “I asked for a Laffy Taffy, not a jigsaw puzzle,” someone joked.
Some fans have even developed elaborate unwrapping strategies. “You must open from the end seam, fold edges down with minimal tearing, and proceed to peel the taffy like the leg of a rabbit. It’s the only way,” one shared. Another shared a different trick: “I put mine in the freezer for like 20 minutes and they’re so good to eat and peel so easily when frozen.”
But all in all, the wrapper hasn’t just been a defining quirk, it’s been a real issue—until now.
Laffy Taffy just officially debuted new, easier-to-open wrappers that promise a “smoother opening experience” with no sticking or shredding.
The brand says the candy has had minor wrapper tweaks since being acquired from Nestlé in 2018, but this is one of the most significant redesigns in its history. The new wrappers will be rolling out on Laffy Taffy’s signature Mini Bar size and ropes.
So for anyone tired of accidentally eating paper, the future holds a cleaner, smoother Laffy Taffy experience—plus, of course, plenty of fresh new jokes. And as long as the candy itself stays the same, we’ll keep reaching for it whenever we’re craving an old-school sugar fix.
Tootsie Roll, take notes.
