There’s something about a packaged snack cake that takes you right back—whether it’s the fluffy filling of a Twinkie, the powdered sugar from a Donette, or the bright pink coconut coating of a Sno Ball. But one limited-edition treat in the Hostess lineup dials up the nostalgia even more, combining a classic snack cake you know with the flavors of a childhood summertime favorite: the s’more.
And after a three-year hiatus, the treat is finally back for a limited time.
The Hostess Frosted S’mores Cupcake Is Back
This summer, Hostess has revived its seasonal spin on the fan-favorite Cupcakes: the Frosted S’mores Cupcake. The limited-edition treat taps into the flavors of a gooey, toasted s’more, but wraps it all up in snack cake form.
The seasonal cupcakes were first introduced in 2020, but, from what we can tell, haven’t been back on shelves since 2022. Recently, they’ve been spotted again at Walmart. The packaging—and the name—have changed slightly since the original debut, but the sweet snack itself looks to be the same.
At a glance, it could pass for the classic Hostess Cupcake, complete with that signature white swirl on top. But inside, things are a little different. Instead of the usual chocolate base, it has a fluffy yellow cupcake that’s meant to represent the graham cracker portion of the s’mores equation. Some reviewers felt like it leaned more “yellow cake” than “graham cracker,” which they called a bit of a miss—but others didn’t seem to mind.
The marshmallow element comes through in the creme filling, which reviewers say has a “good marshmallow flavor and thickness.” And as for the chocolate, there’s plenty. A thick, rich layer of frosting tops each cake, giving it that gooey, melted chocolate texture you can really sink your teeth into.
“These taste like the golden cupcake but more chocolatety. Overall, this has a great flavor,” one reviewer shared.
Bringing back a s’mores-inspired treat in the middle of summer feels like a no-brainer for Hostess. Now, whether or not it totally nails the essence of the campfire classic is up for debate—but some fans are all in.
“Buy at least 2 boxes,” one reviewer said. “Trust me.” Another added, “These were really good! The cake flavor is more like a yellow cake than graham cracker, but they were fresh and delicious.”
It’s not yet clear if the Frosted S’mores Cupcakes are a Walmart exclusive, but that’s where they’re turning up for now. Keep an eye out—the seasonal treats could be rolling out to other retailers before summer is over.
