Costco is beloved for its expansive selection of fan-favorite snacks, wholesale groceries, and plenty of frozen foods, but the real winner is, arguably, the Kirkland Signature bakery selection. The chain’s bakery offerings have become cult-classics, with fans hopelessly devoted to the store’s pastries and desserts—and absolutely losing it when bestsellers are discontinued. And, given how Costco seems to be altering beloved recipes and removing favorites left and right, shoppers are already on edge.
Luckily, a fan-favorite Costco bakery item is back on shelves, but the newest iteration has shoppers divided.
Costco Brings Back Kirkland Signature Triple Chocolate Muffins
In the fall of 2024, Costco discontinued the iconic Kirkland Signature muffin. Fans were furious after hearing the news, begging the chain to keep the same recipe and even threatening to never shop at Costco again. And while it seems like Costco heard the pleas and brought the muffins back, it made major changes to the original flavors—and fans aren’t exactly happy.
The new Kirkland Signature Triple Chocolate Muffins feature a chocolate cake and chocolate chips on top, similar to the original. But, if you were desperately awaiting the return of the OG muffins, you may be disappointed.
Instagram user @costcohotfinds shared a spotting of the new bakery item, and while many fans were quick to share excitement, saying they “missed these [muffins] so much,” others flocked to the comments to share their personal reviews. According to some Costco shoppers, the new recipe is nowhere near as good as the original.
“Not a fan of the smaller muffins! The texture and taste are way off,” wrote one commenter. “Wish they would bring the large muffins back!”
While the consensus is that the new muffins vary significantly from the originals, some shoppers have confirmed that the new recipe is “still good.” According to one customer, the new muffins are “not as chocolatey” as the original, “and they’re more fluffy now and not as dense.”
Others, though, completely disagree; one Redditor wrote that the new Costco chocolate muffins are “tiny, expensive, overly-thick, dry, and have an off-putting taste to them.” Another agreed that “the chocolate is a serious downgrade from the old muffins.”
Beyond the flavor, the biggest difference is the size of the muffins. The original muffins “took two hands to hold,” and came in packs of six; they cost $10 for a dozen, and shoppers could mix and match six-packs. The new ones, which are sold in packs of eight for $6.99, are labeled as “mini,” but are about the size you would expect for a standard grocery store muffin or cupcake.
Even though the internet is divided, you never know which camp you’ll be in. So if you’re missing the old muffins, shopping for breakfasts, or heading to brunch, it may be worth picking up a pack of the new Kirkland Signature Triple Chocolate Muffins from the Costco bakery—just try not to get your hopes up.
