FDA Announces Recall of Breyers Ice Cream for Undeclared Life-Threatening Allergen

Unilever Manufacturing, Inc, has issued a recall for select tubs of Breyers ice cream due to a labeling error. Breyers’ Rocky Road Ice Cream was inadvertently packaged in a “Chocolate Truffle” tub with a “Rocky Road” labeled lid. Because of the packaging error, the ice cream contains undeclared allergens.

Unilever initiated the recall for 6,668 cases on June 2, 2025, and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) classified it as a “Class II” recall, meaning eating the ice cream “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” on June 10, 2025.

How To Identify The Recalled Breyers Ice Cream

To determine if you have the recalled ice cream in your freezer, look for a Breyers tub labeled as “Chocolate Truffle” ice cream with a mismatched lid labeled “Rocky Road” ice cream. The tubs actually contain Rocky Road ice cream—a chocolate ice cream with marshmallow and chocolate-covered almond pieces—rather than Chocolate Truffle ice cream, which is a dark chocolate ice cream with dark chocolate truffles. The 1.5-quart tubs have the lot code JUL1026GB3 and UPC 077567457288 printed on the package.

What To Do if You Have the Recalled Ice Cream

The Breyers ice cream has been recalled because it may contain undeclared allergens, specifically nuts, which the FDA requires to be disclosed on the label. The Chocolate Truffle Ice Cream tub says the ice cream “may contain tree nuts,” while the Rocky Road Ice Cream lid says the product contains almonds. 

Because the tubs contain Rocky Road ice cream instead of the Chocolate Truffle ice cream, the allergen warning of “may contain tree nuts” on the side of the tub is technically accurate. However, Unilever is recalling the product out of an abundance of caution.

So, if you have nut allergies or sensitivities, you should not consume the recalled Breyers ice cream as it can cause serious or life-threatening allergic reactions. Instead, throw the Breyers ice cream away or return it to the place of purchase for a refund or replacement. 

If you do not have nut allergies or sensitivities, you do not need to respond to this recall. The Breyers ice cream was recalled out of caution due to a packaging and labeling issue that could lead to allergic reactions, not because the ice cream is inherently unsafe to consume. However, if you do have the Breyers Chocolate Truffle tub that contains Rocky Road ice cream, and you would like to return it for a refund or replacement to purchase the correct flavor, you can.
