This $13 Apple Slicer and Corer Is a Huge Time Saver

I love anything and everything related to apples: apple crisp, apple pie, caramel apples, baked apples, applesauce. My first drink when I turned 21 was a hard apple cider, and I want to get married in an apple orchard one day.

One thing I don’t like about apples, however, is preparing them. Sure, I can cut up an apple with my chef’s knife, but the slices are usually uneven and the process is tedious—especially if I’m cutting several apples for a cobbler recipe. I eventually caved and got an apple slicer tool, but it left me with thick wedges that I had to cut again anyway.

But not all apple slicers are created equal. Amazon shoppers found a model that improved on the traditional thick-wedge design and even works as an apple corer, too. “This is a fantastic apple cutter,” one five-star reviewer claimed. “Best I have ever used.”

At first glance, the PrepWorks gadget looks like many traditional apple slicers. It features a ring of stainless steel blades and two thick handles on the side. Place the tool over the center of the apple, brace your hands on the sturdy handles, and use your body weight to push down. “Might require a little pressure, but the effort is worth it, instantly coring and dividing an apple into perfect slices,” said one reviewer

So what makes shoppers prefer this model over others? There are two key differences: the number of blades and the attached blade cover.

Many apple slicers cut the fruit up into eight to 10 pieces, but the PrepWorks model cuts apples into 16. “The slices are much thinner than my previous apple slicer,” said one happy customer, who also praised the gadget for being “such a time saver.” Home cooks love these thin, uniform slices for making picturesque apple desserts and creating snacks for younger children to enjoy.

What makes an attached cover so special? First, it covers the sharp blades during storage so you don’t accidentally cut yourself when picking it up. Second, the cover helps push apples all the way through the blades so you don’t have to put your fingers near the sharp edges.(I’m all for kitchen tools with safety features, since I can be accident-prone).

One shopper raved about the cover in their review: “The hinged safety cover is a thoughtful addition. It prevents accidental cuts and keeps your fingers safe during slicing. Kudos to the designers for this feature!”

Speaking of safety, several reviewers mention how they prefer using the apple slicer over regular knives. “I was using a steak knife to cut up my apples in the morning, but I sliced some skin off of my thumb,” reported one shopper. “This is so much better.”

The $13 PrepWorks apple slicer is a simple tool with many benefits. It’s easy to use, creates even slices, prioritizes safety, and has nearly 17,000 five-star ratings.
