Michael Douglas plays a Wall Street–type jerk who gets an intriguing birthday present in 1997’s The Game — he’s invited to play a “game” that quickly turns into a dangerous mind-bender, a harbinger of the dystopian 2021 Korean survival thriller series Squid Game.

In a game of another kind, Jodie Foster was set to play a devious waitress, but director David Fincher wanted her to play the daughter of Douglas’ character … BUT Douglas preferred she play his sister — which was silly because they had costarred in 1972’s Napoleon and Samantha when little Jodie was 9 and great big Michael was 28.
No surprise, Jodie was out — but she sued studio Polygram for $54.5 million. They settled out of court.
